hearing
he moves and though you can hear him, you cannot see. every squeak of a floorboard sends an alert between your brain and your ears, causing your chin to lift cautiously and your temple to tilt. you can hear the door open and close and the birds that nest above the porch. you can hear the hard beating of the heart inside your chest and the rush of blood to your head. you can hear him make phone calls, open the refrigerator. he carries on with his afternoon and you sit, letting your mind trail after him with numbing fingers. if you stay still enough (and you are staying still) you think you can hear the vibrations of those unseen sun rays as they heat your bound knees.
